Veterans Day, a federal holiday, is observed annually on November 11 throughout the United States to honor the valiant men and women who have served in the US Armed Forces.
Veterans Day events will be held on Fridays all around the world and will recognize close to 18 million people. The festival commemorates the end of World War I.
What is Veterans Day? Before Armistice Day
Honoring military veterans has long been a tradition in the United States. To mark the end of hostilities in World War I, American President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th as Armistice Day in 1919.
It was previously known as Armistice Day because significant hostilities in World War I were formally ended when the Armistice with Germany went into effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Since then, it has developed into a day to remember the country’s war dead.
When Will Veterans Day 2022?
On June 1, 1954, Armistice Day was formally renamed Veterans Day. Veterans Day can be observed on either Saturday or the Friday before if it falls on a Saturday; however, if it does so on a Sunday, it is typically observed on the Monday following. Most states observe Veterans Day as a state holiday, a federal holiday, and a bank holiday. This is the reason why state and federal employees, as well as those in the armed forces, have the day off. Today 11 Nov 2022 is the Veterans Day in the USA.
Should You say Happy Veterans Day or Thank you for your service?
Avoid saying “Happy Veterans Day,” as there are more appropriate phrases, the American Legion’s deputy director of media relations John Raughter said to USA TODAY in 2016. (You shouldn’t even wish someone a happy Memorial Day.) The proper response is to thank them for their service.
In an editorial for Psychology Today, Michael Brennan, a veteran of the U.S. Army and associate clinical director of a veterans program at Rush University, said that when he was serving, people frequently thanked him for his service and it made him feel good to be recognized.
Veterans Day is Different than Memorial Day
Memorial Day, as opposed to Veterans Day, celebrates military personnel who passed away while serving in American forces.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day’s origins can be traced to the time of the Civil War. It became a federal holiday by an act of Congress in 1971.
Veterans Day DOODLE
A US Marine Corps veteran and Diné collaborated to create today’s Google Doodle in recognition of Veterans Day in the US. Google replaces its homepage logo with fresh content created especially for Veterans Day each year as part of its commitment to supporting the US troops. Monty Little, a Diné (Navajo Nation member) and former member of the United States Marine Corps, is the author of this year’s edition.
