What is an E-passport in India?
India’s first e-passport was launched in the year 2008 for our former president Pratibha Patil. Up to 2021, approximately 20K e-passports were offered by India’s passports services but they were only for administrative officers and VIPs.
Fortunately, from 2022, e-passport will be available for every ordinary person in addition to all VIPs and officers. If you are going to apply for a passport and can wait for some time, we recommend you apply for an e-passport.
Up to 2021, we have simple passports but the problem with that passport is, candidates’ credentials can be leaked and can be used for fraud. This is why we often hear about fake passports. Now, India is going to launch an e-passport for everyone, willing to have a passport.
Basically, an e-passport comes up with more security than is acquired by a chip and futuristic technologies. In that chip, candidates’ credentials like a fingerprint, retina scan, biometric details will be stored securely.
That chip will help to identify whether the person who is going to travel is original or fraudulent.

On 1 Feb 2022, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget announcement has announced that the government is going to roll out e-Passports from 2022-23 to enhance convenience for Indian citizens.
According to industry experts and the motive behind developing e-passports for all, e-passport will be more relief providing service to overall citizen experience, enhance security, and facilitate smoother international travel.
e-passports will be designated with radio-frequency identification (RFID) and biometrics to ensure the identity of the individuals. In case there is any confound that will occur with the embedded chip, the system will be able to detect it and in such a case the passport will not be authenticated.
This is how to apply for e-passport in India-
Here are some easy steps that you must have to follow for applying e-passport online in India.
Step 1. Visit the official website of Indian passport services.
Step 2. On the home page, download the E-form through the Download e-form link.
Step 3. Enter all the required details and click the validate and save button. And An XML file will be generated that is required for further submission.
Step 4. Now, register through the Passport Seva Online Portal.
Step 5. login the passport Seva with your registered login id.
Step 6. Now, it’s time to upload that XML file, through the upload e-form link.
Step 7. Click on the Pay and schedule appointment link. on the view/saved screen for booking an appointment.
Step 8. online payment can be made from- credit/debit card, SBI bank Challan, Internet banking.
Step 9. Once, payment has been processed, click the print application link to print the application receipt, holding your application reference number or appointment number.
Step 10. Visit the Passport Seva Kendra or you can visit the regional passport office along with your original documents.
Note: Once, you have successfully applied to the e-passport, an SMS will be sent by them, you can show that SMS as proof.
